RBC - Royal Bank of Canada - released their Climate Action 2026 report on Jan. 15, 2026. Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, sat in on the webinar and in this video she reports that she was 'gobsmacked' by the climate zealotry she witnessed. RBC employees on the panel expressed their view that they wanted climate change ideology to be 'pan-bank' - Stirling found that 'terrifying.' Why? Well, imagine if you want to renew your mortgage but you have a natural gas furnace...could a mortgage renewal (or a mortgage for a new home purchase approval) be predicated on whether you have (or are willing to install) a heat pump??? Can Canada 'double the power grid' as the Prime Minister has recently said we must do, and at the same time effectively decarbonize it, as RBC proposes? At a cost of $1 trillion as cited in the RBC report. Canada is now a net IMPORTER of electricity from the USA, the country that the elbows up crowd likes to smear and poke in the eye, so if we 'decarbonize' home heating, from natural gas to electrification, where will we get that additional electrical power from? Quebec has always been seen as a vast provider of electrical power, but the province has required homes to phase-out wood heating or natural gas in favour of electrical heating. This has created a significant burden on Hydro Quebec's internal, provincial power supply. During the extreme winter storms of January 2026 across Eastern Canada and the Eastern seaboard of the US (which are main clients of Hydro Quebec), Quebec Hydro could not supply contracted electricity to New England through the new "NECEC" line. Instead, Hydro Quebec was importing natural gas fired power from Ontario!! To keep the lights on and homes heated in Quebec!! Net Zero thinking and decarbonization are catastrophic for society, especially in times of weather extremes. In Nashville, Tennessee, a tremendous ice storm has coated power lines with an inch or more of ice and brought those lines down, snapped off power poles; thousands of people have been without power for over a week and dozens of people have died. People who still had access to natural gas heating for their homes, as in the Ashville, North Carolina, disaster of Hurricane Helen of 2024, had the ability to cook and heat while the electrical power was down. Elon Musk sent 500 generators to afflicted areas in Nashville, just to help keep people alive. That's a warning to Canada on Net Zero policies for the power grid. Yes, we DO have to build out more reliable power generation; no, unreliable renewables and battery storage will not fit the bill. Hopefully banks will go back to just banking and leave the power grid to Professional Engineers.
