Climate Week NYC (aka New York Climate Week) is underway and Premier David Eby of British Columbia is there making a pitch for investment in BC's clean energy, mines, and forestry. In a 'tweet' he rather sheepishly acknowledged that it was unusual for him to be in New York City, let alone in the USA, in a reference to the tariff troubles and angst between the two countries. Eby is promoting clean energy investments, but another report says the "CleanBC" plan will do far more damage to BC's economy than Trump's tariffs. Eby claims that BC is attractive to investors because of the clean hydropower advantage and that there's a lower carbon footprint for manufacturing because of BC's hydro. He forgets to acknowledge that our friends in the USA are supplying BC with electricity during their hydro shortfall, due to drought. Though BC has always framed itself as 'green and clean' the evidence shows that BC's ports, airports, most of its mining industry, its massive ferry service, mostly run on oil, natural gas, biomass...and clean electricity makes up only 18% of the energy consumed in BC. Likewise, a report by Kent Zehr, P. Eng., shows that BC's plan to go to ZEV vehicles (based on Keller et al) is a flawed analysis with serious implications for BC's socio-economic status.
