Prime Minister Mark Carney met with provincial premiers in Saskatchewan on June 2, 2025 to discuss ways to remove internal trade barriers and to propose national building projects. One project that came out of the meeting appears to be "Wind West," presented in slick video promotion by Premier Tim Houston of Nova Scotia. "Wind West" proposed that a 66 Gigawatt offshore wind farm could be built that would provide 27% of Canada's electricity needs. With PM Carney's desire to pull away from US influence, and to go 'Net Zero' this project sounds appealing to those who don't know much about how the power grid operates. Despite the fact that Premier Houston says the wind is stable and blows there some 60% of the time, what about the other 40%? If you have such a massive source of power from an unreliable wind farm source, you would need equivalent reliable, conventional power to back up the system during any loss of wind. Likewise, just as Spain and Portugal recently experienced, variable power generation like wind and solar can cause frequency disturbances which can lead to blackouts - in the case of Spain and Portugal, both nations went 'Net Zero' early. Total blackout for over a day. Coincidentally, this happened the same day that our Net Zero promoting Prime Minister was elected. Was it a sign? Power generation is a very complex field. You might want to review this rough estimate of an east-west power grid connection which was written by Kent Zehr, P.
