LaMotta scored two knockdowns in the seventh round and then dropped DeJohn three times in the eighth. The referee stopped the contest at 2:41 of Round 8, under the applicable commission rules, after the third knockdown of the round.
The fight was particularly significant for LaMotta because he was preparing for his upcoming middleweight championship opportunity against Marcel Cerdan. BoxRec records that LaMotta went on to defeat Cerdan by referee technical decision after nine completed rounds on June 16, 1949, becoming world middleweight champion.
