Low Back Pain Interventions: Tier Ranked
When low back pain strikes, what actually works? We broke down the most common interventions so you know where to focus your time and energy.
S-Tier:
General Exercise: Finding movement you love and doing it consistently is key.
Walking: Simple, accessible, and one of the best things you can do for low back health (~150 mins/week is a great target!).
A-Tier:
Patient Education: Understanding that pain doesn’t equal harm keeps you moving with confidence.
Motor Control Exercises: Great for building control, though best combined with broader movement patterns.
B-Tier & C-Tier:
Dry Needling & Spinal Manipulations: Can provide fantastic short-term pain relief, but work best when paired with active rehab.
Foam Rolling/Massage Guns: Feel good in the moment? Go for it. Just pair it with active therapy.
Imaging: Unless red flags are present, most low back pain cases don’t need immediate imaging. See a physical therapist!
D-Tier:
Complete Rest: Staying as active as comfortably possible is best. 70-90% of people recover from acute low back pain within a year. Having a structured, active plan can speed that process up significantly!
