A radioactive legacy hiding beneath Byron Bay 🇦🇺☢️

Heavy mineral sand mining began in the area in the 1930s, and monazite containing naturally radioactive thorium was part of those deposits. Some leftover material was later used as fill, helping create elevated radiation hotspots that can still be detected today.

In fact, scientists spent decades refining its value, and it wasn’t until recently that the most precise measurements became available.
