Originally developed for the civilian market as the Varo 9823E Hyper-Miniscope, the PVS-502 was a Generation 2 passive ‘Starlight’ scope officially adopted by the Canadian Armed Forces in 1976. Initially issued with adaptors for mounting on the C1, C2, and C3 7.62x51mm NATO rifles and the 84mm Carl Gustav recoilless rifle, the PVS-502 was later used as a handheld monocular before being retired sometime in the 1990s.
