Developed by the Defence Research Chemical Laboratory in the late 1950s / early 1960s, the "Educated Stovepipe" was a Canadian instrument designed to measure the location, altitude, and yield of a nuclear detonation. It was intended to be deployed as part of the Nuclear Detonation and Fallout Reporting System (NDFRS), a network of fallout and blast monitoring posts built across Canada between 1959 and 1963 but cancelled before it became operational.
