It can be hard to believe that the bright and colourful Pushing Daisies, and the bloody and violent Hannibal shared the same visionary mind, Bryan Fuller, at their helm.
But the two shows share more in common than you might think. Hannibal is basically just a dark grizzly version of Pushing Daisies:
A shy and awkward protagonist with a unique skill that allows him to access the minds of those involved in a homicide solves specifically bizarre and quirky murders.
Instead of a fried egg lady, it's a totem pole of bodies. Instead of a crispy chicken man, it's a violin corpse. The list goes on.
It's fascinating to see how well these two very different shows inform each other, and I think it speaks to Fuller’s talent as a creator that he can execute the same idea in two very different ways. It will be interesting to see if he once again gives a fresh take on this concept in his future projects.
He's working on a show about Norse gods next though, so probably not.
