Not many movies have scared me as much as M Night Shymalan’s Signs.
I know there are a lot faults with this movie, but let's talk about its greatest strength: Genuine terror.
Probably the most terrifying scene in Signs is the infamous birthday party scene, in which a taped sighting of an alien is played on the news.
The scene is so scary to me because it plays against expectations. There is a lot of building up in the scene, and horror movies can often trick us with suspense. The music can get scarier and scarier until a character opens a door to reveal nothing there, or at the most, something harmless.
This is such an overused trope in scary movies that we come to expect what should be unexpected. But the birthday party scene delivers entirely on its suspense. The music builds, tension rises and at its very peak... Bam. A truly terrifying image.
The scene Is crafted masterfully and holds back nothing to ensure we are left rattled and disturbed, just as it promised.
