Both the 2002 “Spider-Man” film and the 2012 “Amazing Spider-Man” film end with similar “we can never be together” moments between Peter Parker and his romantic lead. But for one of these movies, the ending is a tragedy, and the other attempts to swing into a positive bookend.
Peter Parker mentions to Gwen Stacy that promises you can’t keep are “the best kind”, insinuating their relationship can continue, despite the promise he made to her dying father.
Any poetry to Peter’s line is lost because by ending the film this way, it implies the rest of the 2-and-a-half-hour movie was leading up to this specific emotional climax. But it wasn’t. Only the last 7 and a half minutes were.
We saw Peter struggle with protecting those he loves for a whole movie only 8 years earlier. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ tries to tie up in the final 5 minutes what the original film spent its entire sequel focusing on.
Regardless, shoving an entire emotional arc into the final moments of a story is a pretty weak way to end any film.
