By its nature, a sequel's purpose should be to explore new territories, because no one wants to watch the same thing twice.
I think that a lot of sequels which are widely considered better than the original use the idea of personal crisis to explore their characters further.
It can be as simple as taking whatever identity was established in the first story, and questioning that.
I am Spider-Man. Am I Spider-Man?
I am Andy's toy. Am I Andy's toy?
I want to be a Jedi. Do I want to be a Jedi?
I am not Slytherin. Am I Slytherin?
This isn't a way to guarantee a sequel will work, but it can often create an effective internal plot for the main character or characters, because it's calling into question the very foundation in which the story is built, and so stakes are high.
The audience is given an opportunity to learn more about a character instead of just reiterating what they already know.
