Blender's demolition guy and the fracture guy put some thoughts together as we wanted to get rid of the unnatural look of Voronoi cell fracturing. So I came up with a prototype implementation you can see in this video.

All objects shown in this video are solid and watertight, they do not include any non-manifold geometry, and there are also no air bubbles as the shards fit together perfectly. Good to go for rigid body simulation.

But this is only the first step... Stay tuned.
