Playing around with real-time volumetrics in Blender 2.8. The interactive part was captured on a GTX 1080 but the animated high-res sequences took a bit longer to render, of course.
Opposed to traditional modelling techniques using polygons to render a scene, this demo shows a pure volumetric representation of the world defined only as a function of space. Volumetric rendering is not new in Blender but the Eevee renderer is and so I was interested to check out its capabilities on a difficult case like this.
The strong banding effect is difficult to avoid as of now, to me it looks like the way how sampling works is not entirely optimal and lacks homogenous distribution for some reason. I hope this can be improved in the future.
