Every cancer survivor deserves to celebrate!
Gilberto Lopez had one goal when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago, to ring the bell signifying he completed cancer treatment.
"I told the doctor from the beginning, 'Doc, nothing matters to me right now. The only thing that matters to me is I want to ring that bell for everyone battling prostate cancer! He told me. Yes, you will ring that bell.
He gave me so much confidence when he said that.
Whether it was true or not. I didn't care. I just heard his words and I ran with. I continued with my life, staying strong, staying positive," Gilberto said.
Last month, one of our UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center doctors told him the good news. Team members from our pediatric unit came together to help Gilberto celebrate.
"They all lined up, started clapping and cheering me on. I just got so overwhelmed, so overwhelmed that this miracle happened to me. I am so thankful, and when everybody hugged me, it felt so great."
Now, he wants to share his battle with other men who may be scared to get their prostate checked. "A real man does the test. When I found out about it, I wanted to do the treatment."
