It can be hard to tell if noise in your audio is coming from your gear or your recording environment. Here's how I'm making that distinction in my own recordings. All gear used is linked below and all my gear can be found at kit.com/rayortega.
I'm using a 150ohm resistor to measure the amount of noise coming from the preamps in the audio interfaces and recorders that I use to record audio. It's a tougher process to compare one preamp to another, you need to get more technical with it and in most cases my interests lay somewhere between technical and practical. For me, it's just helpful to know how much of the noise I'm hearing in any single recording is generated from noise in my environment vs. my gear. This dummy plug I made helps me do just that.
Most consumer recorders and interfaces supply around 50dB of gain. When you use the dummy resistor to measure the preamp at 100% of 50dB of gain, you'll hopefully get a measurement that is no louder than -75dB avg. RMS. This should generally mean your device will not add any audible noise or any amount of noise you can't get rid of in post-production.
But a better test is to plug in your microphone, set the gain to what you need to record a good level (-18 to -12db peak) and then insert the dummy plug and measure the noise floor.
This number should be well below -75dB cause in most cases you won't be using 100% of the gain in your device. But even beyond the numbers, listen. You can now hear exactly the amount and type of noise your preamp is or isn't exhibiting.
From there you can determine if this is an acceptable piece of gear for your productions and if you hear much more noise in your final recordings, then you have a good idea that it was coming from your environment and that you need to make some adjustments to your recording space if you want to reduce that noise.

![Canon 80D for Video
Is the Canon 80D your next video DSLR? Find out what I like about this new version of the Canon crop sensor line and what I dont. â–º All gear linked below*.
Building on the Canon 70D, the 80D adds a few key features that we have been waiting for Canon to add for quiet awhile. The biggest of these (to me) is 60fps at 1080p. This means I no longer have to compromise resolution if I want to shoot slow motion footage.
Canon also finally added a headphone output to monitor audio that you are capturing with the 80D.
Other things I like about the 80D, the touchscreen really helps when shooting video because its like a more traditional ENG cam that has access to most settings right on the body of the camera. Like the 70D, this is a great camera for those who want or need continuous auto-focus and now includes the ability to adjust the speed at which the focus pull occurs. ISO performance is improved a little with a new sensor and you now get an intervalometer for time-lapse shots built into the camera. And you can now change manual audio levels while recording.
Some things I dont like, still no 4K, still cant magnify the image while recording, no focus peaking or zebras for exposure and focus respectively. No native flat picture profile and 1080p 60fps is not available in .mov mode, mp4 only. And still no clean HDMI out.
Would I buy the 80D? If this was my first DSLR for video, yes because this is the best in the crop sensor line as far as Im concerned. That said I havent checked out Nikons offerings to see if they have finally caught up. However you can get a 70D at a reduced price and be almost as happy with an image that is similar. So if budget was a major concern, I would look for a 70D. Also, at this price point, you can look at mirrorless cams such as the offerings from Panasonic and Sony. Depending on how you shoot, those may be much better options. Since I shoot YouTube videos by myself, the tilt screen is critical and Sony doesnt provide that in the a6300 otherwise that is the cam I would probably get. It has its own limits.

**My Picture Profile Recipe - Rays Way**
The picture profile I use in most of my videos is simply a version of ProLost Flat: http://prolost.com/blog/2012/4/10/prolost-flat.html
I dont dial back the settings quiet as much but its probably a good idea to do so. Read that article to find out why.
