1) St. Brigid performed an abortion!: A 7th-century hagiography describes how she used her strong faith to bless a pregnant nun, making the child disappear
2) St. Brigid is no longer a saint- but continues to be worshipped anyway! The Catholic church took away her sainthood in 1969 (perhaps due to her pagan associations) but her feast day continues to be celebrated in Ireland.

This is a prayer song I wrote to Brigid, meant to be sung on Imbolc eve! Brigid is an ancient figure: Spoken of as one (and sometimes three) goddesses in medieval Irish texts, her associations with fire, cattle and healing seem to have been passed on to the early Irish saint Brigid, who is said to have founded a holy house at Kildare, where an eternal flame was tended by her nuns.
In my upcoming cl ass Singing the Wheel of the Year, we’ll be learning traditional and new songs inspired by the 8 neo-pagan holidays, including Imbolc, the feast day of Brigid! Each week for 8 weeks, we’ll explore several songs for communal and solo singing that you can bring to your practice- learning LOTS of history and folklore along the way. The pagan holidays hold practices and histories that connect us with people’s history and forms of protest going back over a thousand years. We’ll get to look at some of the riotous- and righteous- histories of these holidays as part of our cl ass! On the abortion story: St. Cogitosus, who wrote a hagiography of Brigid ca 650 AD, wrote of how Brigid assisted a nun who had become pregnant: “...exercising the most potent strength of her ineffable faith, blessed her, causing the child to disappear, without coming to birth, and without pain.”
The Catholic church took Brigid out of the calendar in 1969, perhaps due to doubts of her historical veracity (i.e. awareness of her pagan origins). However, she remains a patron Saint of Ireland- becoming more and more a folk saint!
