On Wednesday, I picked up two PowerPC-era Macs from a friend. They both appear to be in good shape, and I'l like to figure out exactly what I have... because one is a mystery until I power it up.
The first Mac is a Power Macintosh 6100 or a Performa 6100-series computer... it's anyone's guess until I power it up, as the nameplate fell off years ago. It came with the original Apple Multiple Scan 15 display, which tells me it might be a Performa. We'll focus on the computer this stream, as it's difficult to show the monitor on-stream.
The second Mac is a Tangerine iMac G3, with the matching keyboard and original transparent power cord, but a mismatching Strawberry puck mouse. No big deal, the price was right. I was told that it worked when tested three or so years ago; in a more recent test attempt, it chimed but the display didn't work. This could be an adventure in brittle plastic land!
Will I have a Power Macintosh 6100 or a Performa 6118CD? Will I get anywhere with the iMac? Will I break plastic? You'll have to watch to find out!

I found an SE/30 on eBay (the place where I buy the things I later regret™) that looked like a good candidate: it was auction format, the auction end time was during the day, and most importantly, there was no rust visible on the I/O ports. $208 total later (gotta pay shipping and tax), and this SE/30 has landed in the basement.
Last time we looked at this SE/30, we completed the recap and cleaned the floppy drive. Tonight, were going to test everything. And if it works, well launch the original install of WordPerfect to see how perfectly it can make my words...
Will it chime after the recap? Will the floppy drive work? Will WordPerfect for the Mac be a treat to use? Youll have to watch to find out!
