A playthrough of Bandai Digital Entertainment's 1996 license-based platformer for PCs running Windows 3.1/95, Power Rangers Zeo vs. The Machine Empire.
Played on the medium difficulty.
Power Rangers Zeo vs. The Machine Empire was one of three games to be based on the Power Rangers Zeo TV series, and it was released the same year as its sibling games, Battle Racers for the SNES (youtu.be/YteLSGoS0-I) and Full Tilt Battle Pinball for the PlayStation (youtu.be/evqYkiQyhrk).
It's a console-style platforming beat 'em up that was developed by Cyberflix, a company best known at the time for their PC point-and-click adventures, including Dust: A Tale of the Wired West and Titanic: Adventure Out of Time. Like most games published under the Bandai Digital Entertainment label, Power Rangers Zeo vs. The Machine Empire was created with the Apple Pippin in mind. The PC/Mac version is virtually identical to the Pippin version, which makes sense when you consider that the Pippin was essentially a consolized PowerMac.
The game bears all the hallmarks of a mid-90s "multimedia" PC action title: it's chock full of badly acted FMV cutscenes, shiny prerendered graphics that look amazing in screenshots, and infuriatingly clunky gameplay. That they got it running under Windows 3.1 is plenty impressive, but man, this is one hot mess of a game. The controls make me think, "What if Bubsy 3D, but 2D?" and the low framerate combined with the way the camera violently bounces around is enough to make anyone feel motion sick.
As much as the game sucks, some of the art is fantastic. Just check out the insane amount of detail in the boss characters! I don't know anything about the series it's based on, but I imagine there were kids out there who got a kick out of playing a game that looked like an animated Power Rangers Trapper Keeper.
