A playthrough of GameTek's 1993 license-based racing game for the NES, Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing.
This video shows the entire Full Season mode.
Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing is a pseudo-3D racing game from Gremlin Graphics (the publisher of the Lotus series and developer of the Top Gear series) that recreates the 1992 Grand Prix season, during which the titular English Formula One celebrity broke records in his Williams FW14B. This NES cart is a demake of the similarly named 16-bit game that saw releases across the Super Nintendo (youtu.be/ctu8MtvpyEc), Genesis, and various computer platforms.
The game retains all of its big brother's modes and options. The full season is the career mode centerpiece, featuring sixteen tracks and a point-based progression ladder. Before each race, you tweak your car's handling to suit the track conditions and drive a qualifying lap to determine your starting position. During the race, you'll have to keep an eye on the condition of your tires - if you put too much wear on them without pitting, you'll be forced to retire. If you're at the top of the leaderboard when the season ends, you win! If not, just punch in your password and try again.
You can also practice each course on its own, and if you need help, the "Improve with Mansell" mode offers useful advice on how to approach every turn.
The graphics and sound have been scaled back, but it's a nice-looking NES game. The turns are clearly telegraphed, the road animates smoothly, and you still get functional side mirrors. (That ending screen, though - haha! What's going on with his face?) The controls are good, too. They don't feel like the SNES game's, but the car handles well and reacts as you'd expect through high-speed corners.
The NES had no shortage of Pole Position-style racers made for it, but Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing sits among the best. If you're into these sorts of games, check it out!
