PLEASE READ: (lyrics & dialogue below)- a fantastic song by a fave band - and a request for Christine Tennant (it also been on my own to do list for some time, so I bumped it up ;-)) - vid follows lyrics- also a bit of hidden plot there as well – this is Christine singing to Erik, but also questioning her own motives at times, and Raoul’s. The darkest emotions for Erik being his anger/revenge/jealousy – darkest emotions for Christine being her betrayal/weakness due to her fears – the deepest devotion, being their love for each other. Those who don’t like hidden plot, just hopefully enjoy vid and read no further… story: Christine is upset that the man she loves is a murderer, but doesn't agree with Raoul’s methods of supposed justice either, and beseeches Erik to cling to what they have and forget his hatred against a cruel world, wishing to put an end to the frequent battles against him and those he exerts against his opera house kingdom. She always feels on edge and watchful, unable to sleep, because of the war between Erik and Raoul, etc. and feels pressured by those at the opera house to turn against Erik. Even if Erik thinks his acts are justified (because he is king of music and ruler there) and even if Raoul thinks his methods to capture Erik are justified- Christine knows they are not – and fears that she cannot get through to either man before it’s too late and a high price is paid – one that will destroy all of them. She beseeches Raoul to give up his hunt, making her bait and also putting her in a very dangerous position- an “ordeal by fire,” (how a person of high rank was tested in historical times- to decide their innocence or guilt, and symbolic of how the PONR stage was set up- how those trials were done. Christine was Erik’s intended queen- he made her into music, to reign with him). Desperate for Raoul to give up his witch hunt, she insists that Erik will take her and never let her go – because in part, she knows that once reunited, she will give in and be lost, never wanting to leave him - it is inescapable. But his vengeance against his subjects, his harsh punishments, frightens and upsets her and is why she turns to Raoul. Still, she cannot fight her heart and knows without Erik she might as well be dead. In the most fierce battle yet to claim her, she shows Erik where her deepest devotion lies, that he has always been her one true love, her soul mate, and throughout all of time, nothing will change that. Symbolism abounds- with clips used and effects. Red is passion- both good and bad – purple for authority/rule. Frames at beginning and end show the flame first flickering- danger- and the rose stays red despite rest of scene going b&w (the rose w/ribbon symbolizing E/C, the deep red, their love).
