A seawall 15 feet high and only 16 inches thick separates the storage area where 73 canisters filled with spent nuclear fuel are stored at the retired #SanOnofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). Located a mere 108 feet from the ocean, and close to major metropolitan areas, the power station continues to pose a danger in the event of a serious storm or tsunami. In that event, it would need to be 16-20 FEET thick.
#PaulBlanch, a nuclear and pipeline expert who has been in the industry for over 30 years, discusses the infrastructure of the facility as a whole as well as the individual storage casks. If the ocean were to break through and flood the casks, the difference in temperature between the ocean water at 70F and the radioactive casks at 450F might well cause the lining to crack, but the NRC has not addressed this risk.
