This breathing technique called “Popeye Breathing” is great to learn for swimmers of all levels and ages. Can you do a good Popeye the Sailor impression? You’ll want to use it for this technique! Watch SwimSmooth’s Head Coach Paul Newsome demonstrate this technique.

One-sided mouth breathing – similar to how Popeye the Sailor chews his spinach – keeps you from swallowing too much water so you can stay focused on track.

This demonstration uses a traditional in-ground pool with an Endless Pools Fastlane® to generate the swim current. (In an Original Endless Pool, the water stays crystal clear with less chlorine than is allowable in tap water.)

Note: beginning around the 1:24 mark, the water distorts the view of the Fastlane unit in relation to the swimmer. The Fastlane unit measures just 34"" tall, 18"" deep, and 29"" wide.
