In this video, we're delving into the overlap between gastroparesis and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO, shedding light on a recent systematic review with a meta-analysis that investigates their relationship - link to the study here ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10105503
Gastroparesis, defined as delayed stomach emptying, shares strikingly similar symptoms with SIBO. Patients with both conditions often experience postprandial nausea, excessive fullness, dyspepsia (indigestion), and bloating.
Commonly associated with diabetes and post-surgical neuropathy or myopathy, Gastroparesis can also appear as idiopathic, meaning cause unknown.
A recent study examined 385 patients with Gastroparesis, revealing a surprising finding: a staggering 41% of these patients also had SIBO. However, the methods used to diagnose SIBO yielded varying prevalence rates, raising questions about the accuracy of different testing techniques.
Does Gastroparesis lead to SIBO, or could there be a common underlying cause?
