This Pitfall II Lost Caverns footage on the Atari 5200 is such a cool piece of gaming engineering history. David Crane originally built the Atari 2600 version with a custom chip he designed himself called the Display Processor Chip, which let the aging 2600 pull off smooth scrolling and four channel music that nobody thought the hardware could handle. When the game got ported to the Atari 5200 in November 1984, a programmer named Mike Lorenzen handled the job and actually snuck in an entire secret second cavern level as a hidden bonus after finishing the main port. Activision's marketing team didn't want the versions looking too different from each other so this extra content basically became an Easter egg instead of an advertised feature. Harry is chasing down his niece Rhonda, her pet mountain lion Quickclaw, and the Raj diamond through a massive underground cave system, and unlike the first game there is no timer or limited lives here, just checkpoints to guide you. It really shows how much creative effort went into squeezing more life out of aging hardware back then. Did you ever play this one on the 5200 or did you know it on 2600 first?
