Pulling up Batman Returns on Genesis today, and this one surprises people every time because it has almost nothing in common with the SNES version I posted before. Konami made that one as a Final Fight style brawler, but this Genesis cart was built by Malibu Interactive as a straight up side scrolling platformer, published by Sega back in late 1992. The story actually picks up in the middle of the movie, which honestly makes sense since Batman himself does not even show up on screen until about 45 minutes into the actual film. I am running through Gotham rooftops, Max Shreck's department store, and the Red Triangle Circus using batarangs, smoke bombs, and the grappling hook, but fair warning, this game earned a reputation as one of the more brutally difficult Batman titles out there thanks to some rough hit detection and tight enemy placement. There is also a hidden level select code buried in this cart if you know where to look. It is a rough diamond for sure, but there is something charming about how dark and detailed they made Gotham look here. Let me know if you remember struggling through this one as a kid.
