If a Pikmin is following you when it gets hit by a hazard, then it will persist in following you, no matter how far away you go, until it dies. Additionally, you can whistle the captain that the suffering Pikmin are following, and the game thinks you whistled all of the Pikmin following that captain. Hence, all of the suffering Pikmin following that captain are saved.
Interestingly, you can even press X while a Pikmin is suffering, and it will not stop following you, even after you save it!
This is not helpful for going into Submerged Castle with non-blue Pikmin. In fact, this glitch isn't incredibly useful besides for swag.
Day 7 of my Onionless challenge is going pretty slowly, but I'll try to get it done soon!
