Piccolo trumpet + MaxMSP granular glitch patch! Or, in other words: “woosh-chug-chug-weeeo-weeeo-weeeo-brrrrrrr-zzzzzzzzz.” 🎺🤖

I’ll never forget a lesson I had with Wadada Leo Smith back at Calarts, in which we used an hour of time to explore all the “incorrect” ways to play the trumpet. Tube sounds, air sounds, thumps, split tones, gurgles, whooshes, squeaks…

After years and years of studying trumpet with a focus on accuracy and technical precision, this single class turned my whole world upside down.

There was *so* much more within my instrument than I had realized—so many new sonic corners, new vocabulary, new avenues for exploration and creativity, new ways to come in and out of sound.

Now, thanks to that lesson, every time I pick up my instrument I ask myself, “I wonder what new sound world I’ll discover today?”

And it turns out there’s always more to uncover, if you approach with open ears.👂❤️🎺
