Non-toxic calcium gluconate was used instead of mercury(II) thiocyanate. Hexamine fuel tablets provided the necessary heat. The calcium colored the flame orange-red. In addition, some strontium chloride was added to color the flame red at the beginning. Calcium gluconate decomposes and oxidizes when heated, producing water vapor and carbon dioxide. The decomposition products calcium oxide and carbon have a larger volume than the original substance, forming a snake:
C₁₂H₂₂CaO₁₄→11С + CO₂↑ +CaO + 11H₂O↑
