"The Pupil" tells the story of a twelve-year-old Daan, whose football team is assigned a new coach. However, the reputable and highly regarded coach abuses his power and sexually exploits the boy. The film illustrates how difficult it can be for children to talk about sexual abuse and emphasizes the importance of sharing the problem.
Karin Junger is a Belgian filmmaker who began her directing career with documentaries, winning the prestigious Joris Ivens Award at the IDFA festival with her 1988 film “Birthplace Unknown”. Her work is characterized by a sense of urgency, a fast pace and social criticism, and inventiveness of style and themes. Her latest documentary, “Free Space”, is about cancel culture. "The Pupil" is her third feature film.
