“The Stories”.

The World Premiere of “The Stories” is a tragicomedy in the Official Selection – Competition, in which director Abu Bakr Shawky leaps across time in five fragmented narratives about a stubborn pianist named Ahmed who dreams of escaping Egypt's quirky chaos and political turmoil for Vienna. Shawky, an Egyptian-Austrian filmmaker whose debut feature Yomeddine won the François Chalais Prize at Cannes in 2018, masterfully weaves archival footage and musical changes into his new film, creating a journey through censorship, setbacks, and blossoming love during the changing of four Egyptian presidents.

Tragikomöödiline film “Jutud” võistleb meie ametlikus võistlusprogrammis ning samuti on PÖFFil filmi maailma esilinastus. Värskes linateoses hüppab režissöör Abu Bakr Shawky ajas edasi-tagasi viies fragmenteeritud loos jonnakast pianistist Ahmedist, kes unistab põgenemisest Egiptuse omapärase kaose ja poliitiliste vapustuste keskelt Viini.
Shawky, Egiptuse-Austria filmitegija, kelle debüütfilm Yomeddine võitis 2018. aastal Cannes’is François Chalais’ preemia, põimib oma uues teoses meistrlikult arhiivikaadreid ja muusikalisi muutusi, luues rännaku läbi tsensuuri, tagasilöökide ja tärkava armastuse nelja Egiptuse presidendi võimuvahetuse ajal.
