In the United States, parents may soon have to prove their own citizenship to get a passport for their child. This is part of President Donald Trump's latest push to narrow birthright citizenship.
Under the draft guidance, every parent or guardian would have to hand over a passport, a birth certificate or proof of their immigration status when applying for a child's passport. Right now they only need to show they are the parent and produce photo identification. They tick a box saying whether they are U.S. citizens, but file no documents. The proposed rules would carry out an order Trump signed on August 6th, aimed at what the White House calls "birth tourism." These narrower rules come after the Supreme Court struck down Trump's earlier attempt at limiting birthright citizenship.
