북한, 미국의 '적대시정책에 최강경 대응'… 북미대화 거리두기

North Korea vowed to take the toughest response to what it calls U.S. “hostile policy” on Monday.
While the U.S. has continued to emphasize North Korea’s denuclearization, Pyongyang has shown little interest in resuming talks with Washington, standing firm on its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, reported Monday that Pyongyang would take the strongest possible response to what it calls Washington's “hostile policy.”
According to a spokesperson for North Korea's Foreign Ministry, tensions between the two countries are unlikely to ease amid the increasingly tense geopolitical situation.
This came after a U.S. State Department spokesperson said Washington remains committed to the complete denuclearization of North Korea, reaffirming that it has no plans to change its policy on the matter.
In addition, the KCNA cited the “2026 Freedom Edge” exercise as part of what Pyongyang calls “hostile policy.”
The multidomain exercise involving the U.S., South Korea, and Japan is scheduled to take place from September 7th to 11th to bolster trilateral security cooperation.
While Washington's conciliatory approach toward North Korea remains unchanged, Pyongyang has repeatedly dismissed U.S. diplomatic efforts, such as scaling back joint military exercises in the region and pursuing a U.S.-North Korea summit.

"The message appears to be a call for Washington to first take meaningful steps on issues such as human rights pressure, sanctions against North Korea and U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises, all of which Pyongyang views as manifestations of a hostile policy."
North Korea's Foreign Ministry denounced what it called the U.S.'s “denuclearization campaign,” “human rights smear campaign” and "military threats."
Citing the fact that its status as a nuclear-armed state is enshrined in its Constitution, Pyongyang sought to justify its continued possession of nuclear weapons.
It also vowed to exercise its sovereign rights firmly and unequivocally to safeguard its "supreme national security interests."
Experts foresee continued turbulence in any potential talks between North Korea and the U.S.
"North Korea is not calling for unconditional talks. It says the door to dialogue is open if the U.S. recognizes it as a nuclear-armed state and abandons its hostile policy. So I don't think North Korea is likely to return to talks anytime soon.”
It remains to be seen whether North Korea will keep the door open to talks with the U.S.
