Newly released footage from NASA's Psyche spacecraft shows a close-up flyby of Mars, utilizing the Red Planet's gravity to slingshot toward a unique metal-rich asteroid of the same name.
The spacecraft is now on course for its primary destination, with arrival expected in 2029.

Captured when Psyche passed within 4,600 kilometers of Mars, newly released footage from NASA reveals wind-carved streaks stretching across craters up to 50 kilometers wide.
The close flyby served as a critical operational test for the spacecraft's imaging equipment, ensuring systems are fully calibrated as Psyche continues its journey toward the outer asteroid belt.
The spacecraft's ultimate destination is 16 Psyche, located in the outer main belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Unlike most asteroids composed of rock or ice, Psyche is believed to be made largely of metal, including iron, nickel, and precious elements.
Because that composition closely mirrors Earth's metallic core, scientists hope studying Psyche will unlock new clues about the inner layers of our own planet and how rocky worlds first formed.
"It's been bombarded over the three or four million years ever since, and what's left is a lump of metal that scientists think might be pretty similar to the core of our own Earth."
The Mars flyby also gave the spacecraft a critical boost, adjusting its trajectory and adding roughly 1,600 kilometers per hour to its speed.
Equally important, the successful flyby confirmed to mission engineers that Psyche's key scientific instruments are operating smoothly in deep space.
"I mean, it's not easy to find a small body so far away from Earth, right? Like, for example, yesterday we saw images of Mars, and it's close to the center of the image frame. That means I've done my job right."
Launched in October 2023, Psyche has not yet reached the midpoint of its multi-billion-kilometer journey through deep space.
The spacecraft is scheduled to rendezvous with the so-called 'golden asteroid' in 2029, opening a brand-new chapter in planetary exploration.
