A strange video and mix. I transcribed this tune for a quartet, but then mostly didn't include the fourth part. The sheet music was to my left but is not on camera, so I am randomly looking in that direction. For the mic'ing, it was a real experiment. I couldn't find any good source to tell me where to place a mic to record cello, so I used for different mic placements to experiment with the sound. Most videos show Yo-yo Ma with a mic in front of the cello, but I have concluded that this is just for show. The close mic picks up way too much string scratching and bow noises. A far mic picks up the ambience of the room without the background noises. For this recording, I chose a strange mic the middle part. A harmonica mic, about a foot away from the cello, distorts into a sin wave that almost produces a sound like a French horn. I wouldn't do this again (except on purpose), but it proved to be the better all-round recording of the various mic's for that part and I kinda like the distortion!
