This anti-war classic from 1985 was written during the Falklands War. Brothers in Arms is Dire Straits at the height of their career and this song is the reason I stopped using a pick. The guitar is one of the few instruments that can attain a range of emotions, but you need to feel the instrument with both hands. Mark Knopfler finger picks to make his guitar weep, cry, whisper and scream, all in the same song. It took me an hour to learn the notes, then 10 hours to work on the tone, picking, volume swells, etc.
Having said all that about the guitar, I just couldn't resist adding 20 seconds of piano at the beginning and the end ... the chord structure of this song is dripping with passion and a sense of melancholy .
