Using the work of Michael Ristow, I dismantle the oxidative stress concept. I acknowledge that oxidative stress exists but I point out that it is simply not a reliable biomarker of health and that sometimes oxidative stress improves health via hormesis. One cannot decide whether a health intervention is good or bad based on whether it produces oxidative stress. If oxidative stress does not occur, exercise adaptation does not occur. If oxidative stress does not occur, calorie restriction does not improve longevity. If oxidative stress does not occur (such as when taking antioxidants), the body has impaired ability to respond to cancer.

Oxidative stress is not always bad. Often it is good. We cannot use changes in oxidative stress in the body to decide whether something we eat or do is good or bad.
