The picture most people carry of ancient human beings is one of limitation: primitive tools, simple minds, a world explained by superstition rather than understanding. Becket Fusik's observation is that this picture is not supported by what we actually find when we look carefully. The depictions in ancient Egypt show people in cloth, not animal skins, not stone-age utility wear, moving through a world that was clearly more sophisticated than the default image allows.
His argument is not that ancient people had smartphones or modern infrastructure. It is that the people themselves, the cognitive and emotional and creative beings doing the building and the thinking and the remembering, were probably not meaningfully different from us. What separates us from them is scale: more stimulation, more people, faster movement across larger distances. The fundamental human being operating at the centre of all of it is, he suggests, the same type of person. That is the shift in perspective that ancient history research, done honestly, tends to produce.
