An international team led from the University of Cologne has used nickel isotope analysis on marine clay from the K-Pg boundary layer worldwide to identify the Chicxulub impactor, the asteroid that ended the Cretaceous period, as a CI or CM-type carbonaceous chondrite, one of the rarest meteorite classes ever recovered on Earth, with an origin beyond the orbit of Jupiter confirmed by two independent isotope studies.
