A team at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology has extracted human DNA directly from painted cave wall surfaces for the first time, sampling 24 rock art panels across 11 caves in Spain and Portugal including hand stencils at Tresviso Cave and the famous red bison ceiling at Altamira, with the breakthrough sample coming from Panel 11 at Escorial Cave in Portugal.
