In November, 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia erupted after being dormant for nearly 70 years. When rescue workers arrived in Armero, they found 13-year-old Omayra Sanchez neck-deep in concrete and debris. When they tried to lift her, however, they discovered that Omayra’s legs were trapped under a brick door.
