(WARNING: CONTAINS PAINFUL REAL AUDIO FROM THE TRAGEDY) April 19, 1995: A truck exploded outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, killing 149 adults and 19 children, and injuring 680 people. The blast damaged 324 buildings in a 16-mile radius, causing more than $650 million in resulting repairs. The two people responsible for the attack were apprehended within 48-hours - one was executed and the other will never leave prison.
After demolition of the remaining structure, families of victims tied plush toys, letters, and mementos to the fence surrounding the site. A portion of that fence remains at the memorial and is seen in the video.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial opened 5-years later. It features huge walls highlighting "9:01" and "9:03" at opposing entrances, as you walk by the reflecting pool where it all happened at 9:02 AM. The 168 chairs are arranged by which floor each victim was on and represent the now empty chairs at each family's dinner table. Across from the chairs is the 'Survivor Tree', which survived the blast and serves as a monument to the resolve of the great people of Oklahoma City.
I grew up in OKC. This was an extremely painful event and re-living the audio and images needed to create this video is heart-wrenching. I will never forget the photo of the fireman carrying a small, bloodied child from the rubble. The fireman is Chris Fields and the child, Baylee Almon, died a short time after. This video serves as a tribute to the victims, their families, the first responders, the investigators who caught the criminals, the newspeople who provided excellent coverage, and to Oklahoma City for preserving this incredible memorial.
