Chicago Navy Pier - the world famous 3,300 feet long landmark on the shoreline of Lake Michigan - draws more than 2 million visitors each year! It opened in 1916 as ‘Municipal Pier’ and was renamed in 1927 to honor those who served in World War One. During World War Two, it was a US Navy training facility. From 1946-1965, it was home to the University of Chicago. Its current use started in 1995 after a $2 billion redevelopment project added the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, theme park, concert venue, and children’s museum. In 2016, the Navy Pier officially opened the world’s most advanced Ferris wheel, able to withstand winds up to 115 MPH! Today, the Navy Pier is the most visited tourist attraction in ALL of the Midwest.
