At 1.47 million people living in 42 square miles, The Bronx is the 3rd most densely populated county in the United States. That's even with 25% of the borough being designated open space!

In 1639, Jonas Bronck - for whom this borough is named - established the first colony here for the Netherland people. Before this, the Native American Lenape people occupied this area for a millennia. In 1898 The Bronx joined the other four boroughs to form New York City.

This borough is currently 88.5% Democratic and a Republican has never won this district since the parties switched ideologies in the 1920s. It's home to Fordham University, College of Mt Saint Vincent, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Coolest fact about The Bronx: It's considered the birthplace of hip-hop. In 1973, legendary DJ Kool Herc would play mixed instruments and beats while M.C.s would rap over it and people would breakdance. Hip-hop continued to evolve here over that decade and The Bronx has become a wellspring of incredible Latin- and Afro- American music.
