In 1900, Mississippi Governor Andrew Longino convinced the legislature that Mississippi deserves a world class capitol building. So, on the site of the old state penitentiary, the capitol was erected. It cost $1-million in 1990, which is about $30-million in today's dollars - paid for in cash from a settlement awarded for back taxes from the Illinois Central Railroad Company. The Mississippi State Capitol is more than 171,000 square feet, the dome rises 180-feet from the ground, and the eagle at the top is 8-feet tall and 15-feet wide! Guided tours are conducted free of charge by volunteers Monday-Friday at 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM and self-guided tours until 5:00 PM. This is the final video captured of the previous Mississippi state flag flying at the capitol. In June 2020, the state legislature passed State Bill 1796, requiring this flag to be removed and in November 2020, the state voted in a new flag, featuring a magnolia.
