Officer-Involved-Shooting: May 4, 2026
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey shared details about an officer-involved-shooting. This happened on Rigel Road around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Around 11:30 p.m. Monday night, District 2 patrol officers responded to an armed criminal mischief call. The suspect, a Black male in his 30s, had kicked in the doors of four occupied residences. He was carrying a handgun.
The suspect made contact with several residents, made concerning statements, then exited the homes.
When officers arrived and were speaking with victims, the suspect approached officers and pointed the handgun at them. They ordered the man to drop the gun, he did not and that is when the officers shot at the man, killing him.
The suspect has been identified, but we are awaiting next of kin notification. He is a convicted felon in both Florida and Texas.
The officers who fired the shots are Officer R. Vazquez, Officer G. Comayagua, Officer J. Pallint, and Officer A. Schmidt.
No officers were injured in the incident.
This is the 8th officer-involved-shooting this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office is on scene, completing its investigation. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation.
