Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sheriff T.K. Waters and Investigations Division Chief Alan Parker shared details about an officer-involved-shooting that took place on Lenox Avenue near I-295.
Just after 8 p.m., JSO officers received calls about a man armed with a gun firing shots. When officers arrived, the suspect, 40-year-old Calixto Venutti, walked out of his home, shouting at patrol officers and holding the firearm. He then went back into his home.
SWAT responded to the scene and attempted to communicate with Venutti, who discharged one round from his firearm when SWAT officers arrived. Venutti repeatedly walked in and out of his house while SWAT officers maintained cover from a safe distance. When Venutti came outside of his house again, he refused to comply with the officer's orders to drop the weapon, and he attempted to enter a neighbor's home while still armed. SWAT officers Kody Crews, Phillip McCranie, and Shane Lyons shot Venutti before he could enter the house. Venutti died at the scene.
This marks the 9th officer-involved shooting this year. The State Attorney's Office is currently conducting an investigation. Once this investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office will carry out an independent review.
