Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief Alan Parker shared details about an officer-involved shooting after a man pulled his gun on three officers after he punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach. This happened in the San Jose neighborhood.
Two days ago, officers responded to a call about an armed domestic dispute between a man, 28-year-old Alquan Suydam, and his pregnant girlfriend. Suydam fled the scene before officers arrived. Around 7:45 p.m. Sunday evening, Officers J. Shirk, C. Duhon, and C. Melton received a call about a similar incident between the same couple. Officers were told the suspect punched his pregnant girlfriend in her stomach before pulling out his firearm. When the officers arrived to the scene this evening, they found Suydam sitting in his car. He then got out of the car and began to walk with his hands in his pockets. The officers gave loud, verbal commands to stop and show his hands. Suydam then pulled his pistol out of his pocket to point at the officers. The officers shot him multiple times. Once Suydam was on the ground, officers provided medical aid. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. No officers were injured.
This is the 5th officer-involved shooting this year. The State Attorney’s Office is investigating. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct our own investigation.
