Nothing in Judaism makes sense without free choice.
The entire idea of mitzvot - commandments - assumes that human beings have the ability to choose. If we had no choice, there would be no meaning in being commanded to act one way rather than another.
Free choice is therefore not a small detail in Jewish thought. It is the foundation of Torah and the basis of moral responsibility. The ability to choose between right and wrong gives meaning to our actions and allows every person to shape the direction of their life.
In this short insight, Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein explains why free choice is the central pillar of Judaism and the starting point for understanding human responsibility.
Part of a short series exploring free choice, personal agency, and the power we each have to shape our lives.
