Tishitu explains

The circuit acts like an inverter or NOT gate
. When the input is held low, the output is 
high and will provide (source) current. 
When the input is held high, the output is 
low and will sink current.
Trigger pin(PIN2) is used as input pin
and output pin(PIN3) is used for output.
This gives advantage that a relatively higher
and wide range of power supply voltage can be used,
limited by the specification of the 555 IC (4.5V - 16V). 
According to Shannon through his famous 1937 Masters thesis at MIT, 
any combinational logic circuits can be made with switches.
So we can get any logic gate with a wide range of power supply but limited by 
555 specifications.
Our simulation tool is proteus which is a
software for microprocessor
simulation, schematic capture,
and printed circuit board (PCB) design.
